The familiar permed hair, paint pallet in hand, and easy, smooth, relaxing voice that spoke directly to us, Bob Ross is remembered as one of the most recognizable painters of all time. He was a friendly and familiar face we grew to love, and Bob Ross quotes remind us of the man who could easily bring a smile to our face any time we saw him on television.
Using alla prima (wet on wet) techniques, Bob Ross never seemed to make any mistakes or produce any paintings that had flaws. At the hint of any undesired brush stroke was the smoothest brush off explanation of , “we don’t make mistakes, just happy accidents.”
Ironically, Ross became immensely recognizable with millions of people watching his show, yet so few ever made the decision to pick up a paint brush to attempt a painting.
His allure was for the paintings in part, but more for his demeanor and even temperament.
Far from his relaxed persona was his off camera life. Attaining the rank of Master Sergeant in the Air Force, he excelled at his duties, but also decided to never raise his voice after he separated. During his service in Alaska, Ross refined his skills at painting quickly and would complete “a few” paintings while eating a sandwich during his lunch breaks that would be sold later each afternoon. Upon discovering that he could earn more from painting, he left the Air Force and returned to Orlando, Florida where he was raised, to continue studying painting and selling art supplies.
This would lead to Ross’ memorable PBS show, The Joy of Painting.
The show would run on PBS for eleven years and is still played regularly on the network. Attributed to Ross’ easy style and show’s long run on PBS, he earned notoriety as a cult celebrity and often appeared as a guest on other shows but more often was imitated by others.
Through his life, Ross would be married twice and have one son, Robert Steven Ross. Ross would suffer from lymphoma and die from complications when he was 52, in 1995. While he was still making his show, he was showing signs of his illness but kept his health private.
Towards the end of the show, as the treatment for his lymphoma and effects of the disease progressed, he started losing his hair and wore a hair piece, and later wig, to retain his secret from the public. Sadly, at 52, he passed far too young an there are many more happy trees that need to be brought into our magic worlds.
